Lenovo Miix 2 (8, Stylus) announced - Page 22

Comparison: Lenovo Miix2 vs. Dell Venue 8 Pro
We could use a "first post gets updated" thread that summarizes the differences between these devices. The separate threads for each device are awesome, but getting too long to easily read. This is my attempt. Help me keep it updated.

DIFFERENCES:

DELL VENUE 8 PRO:
- "Active Capacitive Stylus", rather than a normal capacity stylus. Unfortunately users have reported disappointing performance with the stylus. It leaves stray marks when you lift the pen between words/letters. The BIOS update helps, but doesn't completely fix the problem. Many people have severe issues with periodic "hover clicking" - registering clicks when the stylus isn't touching the screen. On the plus side, palm rejection with the pen works well and there is hover support for "mouse over" interactions. I personally don't trust the long-term quality and accuracy of the stylus, even if you get one that works initially. If inking is your priority, you may want to wait and see what new models come out in the next couple of months (there are rumors of an Asus and a Lenovo Thinkpad tablet with active digitizer).
- There is a physical Windows button on the side of the device. Many people find the button placement awkward, particularly in portrait orientation, though it is not a huge deal. It does prevent accidentally hitting the windows button, an issue on some tablets with capacitive buttons.
- Accessories (pen and case) are generally reported to be low quality considering their high price. The Dell folio case is relatively slim, but I can confirm that it is somewhat heavy - about 0.4 lbs (189 grams on my scale). It makes the tablet less comfortable to hold for long periods due to the extra weight and girth. There are reports of the stylus tip falling off. The Dell keyboard case looks bulky, but should be a reasonable input method for those who can stand typing on tiny keyboards -- however users report that it is overpriced for what it is (~$100 retail).
- Speaker is on the "bottom" edge if held in portrait. The Dell speaker is *much* louder than the Lenovo (Confirmed).
- Supposedly a 4G LTE version is coming.
- Cannot be charged with most cell phone chargers or over a regular USB port (attached to a computer). A Lumia charger and an old Dell Venue phone charger have been confirmed as working. Most normal cell chargers won't work.
- Cannot power external USB hard disks (not enough power), but works with most flash drives. The Lenovo can power portable hard drives, which is a point in its favor.
- WiFi signal and speed may be better on the Dell version, though our current sample size is one.

LENOVO MIIX 2:
- Capacitive-only stylus (and no palm rejection), but according to Tonyz3, a capacitive stylus is decently usable for writing text (he didn't have the official version). Samples posted with a non-Lenovo stylus: Lenovo Miix 2 (8", Stylus) announced. UPDATE: Confirmation that handwriting-to-text works pretty well in the Windows virtual keyboard with a capacitive stylus, just moderate your expectations if you are used to an active stylus.
- Capacitive Windows button is below the display (less awkward) and seems to require a deliberate press (less chance to accidentally hit it).
- Has GPS, though existing programs may not be able to access the GPS information without updates (example: Microsoft Streets and Trips).
- Can power an external USB hard disk via the microUSB port (confirmed by several sources). The Dell cannot do this.
- Accessories: Lenovo sells a thin and very lightweight flip cover with a stylus that tucks inside. This will make it a much lighter overall package then the relatively heavy Dell Folio case + larger stylus. The flip case will also offer less protection for the tablet, so that is one tradeoff. Unfortunately, initial Amazon reviews of the Lenovo capacitive stylus are very disappointing, even for a capacitive model.
- Speaker on back of the device. The Lenovo speaker is not nearly as loud as the Dell speaker. (Confirmed).
- You can reportedly charge the tablet using a standard computer USB port or any cell phone charger. I'm guessing this would be a really slow way to charge the device and it might not keep up with active power usage if you were doing anything CPU intensive, but still an advantage over the Dell.
- Considerably greater maximum display brightness than the Dell, but both tablets still have very bright displays.
- The Lenovo has a slightly better Bay Trail processor Z3740 vs Z3740D. This means dual channel memory. The Dell is single channel. In ordinary applications the performance difference is very small (~2-3%). There is a larger difference in 3D mark (see PC Magazine's review of the Miix 2), but still only about 10% (e.g. the difference between 33 vs 30 FPS).

SIMILARITIES:

- Battery capacity (17.5 and 18 Whr for Lenovo and Dell, respectively)
- Screen quality is similar, though there are some differences. Both are bright, but the Lenovo has a higher maximum brightness. Some say colors are richer on the Dell. Some say the minimum brightness on the Lenovo is too bright for reading in dark conditions.
- Ports are basically the same. They both lack HDMI-out. Both have a single micro-USB port that doubles as a charging port.
- Annoying: You can''t charge either tablet and simultaneously connect it to a USB device, even with a y-adapter.
- Dual-band 2x2 WiFi for both - *we think*. For the Lenovo the box says "ABGN 2x2 WiFi + BT4.0", but the website shows "WiFi 802.11 b/g/n".
- Camera is not very good on either tablet, though at least one user reports slightly better results on the Lenovo Miix 2.

KNOWN ISSUES:

DELL
- The "Active Capacitive Stylus" has issues with a delay to start and stop writing, hover-clicking, and general accuracy. See detailed forum posts about this. Some people report well-working styluses, but many people have issues, even after getting multiple replacements from Dell. I personally had issues with the stylus I received and Dell quoted a 5-7 week delay on getting a replacement (I returned my Dell tablet, rather than waiting until my return period would have expired - I wasn't confident the new stylus would be better). Sometimes the stylus worked okay, other times it would go crazy. I cannot recommend buying the Dell for the Active Stylus capability until the quality control issues are worked out.

LENOVO
- Minimum brightness on the Lenovo is reportedly too high for comfortable reading in a dark room. But Maximum brightness is higher on the Lenovo, which might be helpful for outdoor usage.
- The on-screen Windows keyboard may have an issue on the Lenovo, but not on the Dell (confirmed by two sources, but another person has no issues with the keyboard). Cause is unknown, but a number of people report frequent double-presses or special characters instead of the normal letter.
- The lower, fake-metal part of the back panel has a shiny section that may be prone to scratches.

OVERALL:

These devices have more similarities than differences. They both have reasonable build quality. The Dell has a "grippy" rubberized feel to the back, while the Lenovo's has a less grippy (though not slippery) textured plastic back. The "active capacitive stylus" on the Dell has the potential to give that device a leg-up over the competition, but it has proved very disappointing so far. For the Lenovo, the sleek flipcover (which doubles as a stylus-holder) might be attractive to buyers who want a really lightweight, compact overall package. However, the flip cover doesn't provide much protection, aside for protecting the screen from scratches. Also, you would have to live without an active digitizer (and without palm rejection) when using the stylus on the Lenovo. Note that Amazon reviews of the Lenovo stylus are very, very poor, even for a capacitive model. The Dell case is a bit overpriced ($40), but provides more protection. However, it also adds significantly more weight and bulk to the tablet, which made the tablet less comfortable to hold for long periods of time with one hand. Another key differentiator is the speaker volume - the Dell has considerably louder sound. At least one person reports considerably better WiFi signal strength and throughput with the Dell versus the Lenovo when in the same locations in his house. The Lenovo can power external USB hard disks, but the Dell generally does not supply enough power to support portable hard disks. The Lenovo (350g) is a bit lighter than the Dell (395g), though most people have reported that the build quality on the Dell feels more solid, so it is a bit of a tradeoff.

FINAL WORDS: These are both enjoyable devices, provided you are aware of their limitations prior to purchase. In particular, these are not desktop or laptop replacements, since they are not dockable (just a single microUSB port that acts as a charging port) and the screen size is relatively small. Some of you will try to turn these little tablets into primary computing devices, which is fine, but I have found first-hand that they are not well-suited to that role. There is also a Catch-22 on the software side. Touch friendly apps are much more enjoyable than Desktop apps on a device of this size, but many of the most useful Windows applications are only available in traditional desktop form. Finally, if a high-quality stylus experience is something you require, I would suggest waiting a couple of months, since there are some exciting new devices in the pipeline.
